Indentures for the purchase of land and slaves belonging to Hampden plantation, Parish of St. Andrew, Tobago, 1823-1829.

Collection comprises two indentures for the purchase of the land and slaves belonging to Hampden plantation and associated properties, in the Parish of St. Andrew, Rockley Bay division of the island of Tobago in the Southern Caribbean. Both indentures are handwritten in black ink on oversize parchment. In addition to the text of the indenture, both indentures contain a "schedule" or enumeration of the slaves included with the landed property of Hampden plantation. This schedule lists the first name, sex, color, age, country of descent, employment, and miscellaneous remarks for each slave, and, separately, slave children born on the plantation, providing their first name, date of birth, and name of the mother. The first indenture, dated 1823 September 5, is between Donald and Mary Brodie of Pole in County Argyll, Scotland (sellers) and Charles Kaye of London and John Hobton Forbes of Ely Place, Middlesex (buyers). The second indenture, dated 1829 March 9, is between Charles Kaye of Netherton, County Devon, and John Hopton Forbes of Ely Place (sellers) and John Gordon of Newton by Old Rain, County Aberdeen, Scotland (buyer).
